Dear Diary,

I wish I had kept a real-time diary of the first day I actually started to feel like a “blogger”. What does that even mean? Like, I guess getting a bunch of stuff in the mail, having a handful of video and photo equipment, when I actually got paid for my work/hobby… these are just some of the things that made me feel like: “okay, this is my title.”

Let me first say, “Hi, welcome to my Toronto Blogger Chronicles diary.” Just a messy free form of me writing out my thoughts, as raw as it can be. So if I have any grammatical errors here, and if it grinds your gears, let me know in the comments below and I’ll make sure to edit it, just for you Mr/Mrs Fancy Pants.

So my first blogger event that I went to was actually in 2017. This was a big year for me. It was my second maternity leave and it was a lot easier than the first one. I knew what was up and I was able to focus A LOT on my blogging -career. Yeah, I think I’ll call it my career now. It feels a little weird to say that though because I think of it more as a hobby. Let’s put a pin on what to call it. It’ll come to me.

The first handful of events, I would go to and converse with a few people and then leave as soon as possible because my all-time shyness would kick in. Believe it or not, I’m not a social person, with strangers. But if I’m in my comfort zone with my friends, I’d like to think I’m super social. But I’ll let my friends tell you that.

Toronto Blogger Chronicles [Day 1] – First
Blogger Brunch

The game changer for my shyness was when I went to a bloggers brunch. It was at a place I was really looking forward to going, but I knew no one there. Oh, and I was also pregnant. Very pregnant. I stepped into this place and to my surprise, there were two extremely friendly bloggers who signaled for me to come over to them. I got super nervous because I knew who they were. The “popular bloggers”.  They introduced themselves confidently and immersed me into their “popular circle” by introducing me to their friends and then we even sat together and made jokes and conversation as if we knew each other for years. So you can imagine, I was sitting there, hearts in my eyes, thinking, wow. God bless you guys. I also made a mental note, that if I were to ever get to that point in my blogging career journey, then I would never change how kind, real and friendly I was. Talk to everyone, not get cliquey. Which now takes me to some of the other experiences I had in 2017.

READ MORE: FLOWER MARKET PR EVENT

The blogger world can sometimes feel like you’re back in high school. I’m not kidding! There are some bloggers who really think highly of themselves when they have a certain amount of followers or sponsorships or if they’re managed by someone. But let’s get real, we all started somewhere and there should be a lot of humble pie being passed around. At all times. It’s not hard to see who those people are. You can tell even by how they engage with others online-

1. They watch all of your stories, all the time and don’t ever like or comment on your posts
2. At events, they give you the silent treatment as if they don’t know you at all.
3. They only start to talk to you when you’re on the same campaign together
4. They only message you to ask you how you got a collaboration or what PR you’re working with

blogger

…and if you see them at an event and you say hi or even try to introduce yourself they may give you a quick hi and an odd look but quickly enthrall themselves into their clique. But that doesn’t bother me. It actually is a great indication of whether this person is really who they say they are online. Ugh, but the bittersweet part for me is even if they decide to change and be nice, I’ll be there with open arms.

I started to think, maybe these bloggers are afraid to open up. Maybe they’re super shy, just as I was. I always give everyone the benefit of doubt. It’s just so much easier and happier to do that than to think negatively of someone.  Anywho, I’ve got some cleaning to do, and I’m starting with the kitchen. So until next time. Toodles! 🙂

toronto blogger diary

When I was growing up I don’t know if it was because I never noticed Ramadan and Eid decorations or if they actually didn’t exist online or in stores. But one thing is for sure, this year blew me away with the number of commercial stores carrying Ramadan/Eid goods. Wal-Mart, Indigo, Crate & Barrel; just to name a few. I’m sure there were so much more (comment below if I missed any). They carried items like onesies with messages like “My First Eid”, “Ramadan Mubarak” (which I missed out on purchasing this year, but inshaAllah next year), Indigo carried local businesses cake toppers, wrapping paper, gift bags and Crate & Barrel had the coolest Ramadan Calendar for kids! (Also missed purchasing this one!) I am seriously so excited for Ramadan and Eid for next year because:

  1. I can actually fast now that I’m not pregnant or breastfeeding. (I did 28 days this year Alhumdullilah!)
  2. I have a huge list of what I need to buy for next year – Never have felt so prepared for something in my life.
  3. We’re starting so many cute traditions for our little ones, so a lot to look forward too.

BALLOONS – @sweet.accents

For my awesome local readers, I found the very best place to get your balloons. Not only does her service beat everyone else, but the product even stands out from the competition. You can find her on Instagram and she has a website with more details.

She also does more than just balloons. She has a wide selection of desserts, especially cupcakes! This is awesome especially when you’re rushing to get everything together for a special day. Instead of driving to various places, just get it all in one place. You can also choose from standard and premium balloons, which means there’s something to fit all budgets. I wish I knew about her before my kids birthdays! Her latex balloons last over two weeks vs. the average 24-48 hours. I’ve had massive balloons before so believe me, I’ll be able to compare. She can also do custom logos/names on the balloons. So cute! Check in with her for delivery, pick-up, and set-up within the GTA. Get 10% off if you’re following her and me on Instagram! 😉

RAMADAN/EID BANNER – PAPER LANTERNS – SPARKLE STARS – @moderneid

This was my first year decorating our home for Ramadan and Eid. I didn’t want to worry about doing the entire first floor of our home or looking for items to buy. I wanted to spend as much time as I could praying, reading Quran and dhikr of course. InshaAllah as every year goes by I won’t have to worry about decorations, as I’ll collect over the years anyway.

I used the sparkle star banner around my cupcake stand as a garland for it. And as a banner to dress up a corner in our family room. Baby D noticed right away when I put it up and said it was so pretty! (Proud mom moment hehe).

Sparkle star banner, paper lantern, Happy Eid Banner and Ramadan/Eid Banner are from  ModernEid.

The pink and blue star/moon banner is a pdf doc purchase via @sidraandco. Check out her Etsy store here. She also does cute custom tote bags. In Arabic or English.

TABLE SETTING

I love these charger, dinner plates, and napkins from Eid Creations. The pink paper plate is from Wal-Mart. Re-used from Baby Z’s birthday. I just love the pop of colour.

PRESENTS

Okay, so ideally I’d love to wrap their presents and have them open them on Eid Day, but I could not wait for them to play with everything, so I gave it to them as I received it. (As seen on Instagram stories.)

INTERACTIVE PRAYER MAT

Super impressed with the technology in this mat. It goes through the entire process of preparing for prayer, the steps, and recitation along with the person praying. Alhumdullilah, now I can ensure that not only I am praying with correct pronunciation but my children too. I highly recommend this mat for those either curious to learn, for children and even adults learning to update/correct.

BUBU & LULU TOYS

I actually bought these while I was in Japan, online. I had seen it on Instagram and had to purchase them right away for my little ones. Mostly, because I learned it was a gift that gave back. They are handmade wooden toys by disabled carpenters in a Gaza Refugee Camp in Jordan.

FOOD

The Eid we opted for catering food and I did not bake. Surprising right? I usually bake up a storm. Eventually, I’d love to add to this segment with traditional Eid and Ramadan recipes or suggestions but all I got for you this year is cupcakes were from Loblaws and we got Mandi from MONASABAH restaurant, which honestly has the best Mandi you’ll ever have!

Hope everyone had a blessed Ramadan and an awesome Eid! Please keep our family in your duas.

MIXED BERRY ICED TEA

TEALEAVES MIXED BERRY ICED TEA NON-CAFFEINATED - #RECIPES #RECIPE #ICEDTEA #FOOD #TEA #TEALEAVES

1. Steep one teaspoon of TEALEAVES mixed berry tea in 1 cup of hot water (99ºC/210ºF is ideal). perfect for this mixed berry iced tea:
2. Remove after 5 minutes, cool. if you can’t wait then add it to cold ice in a drinking glass right away.

3. add honey or sugar. I loved it without any sweetener, so do as you wish.
4. add fresh mint leaves. you can use spearmint as well.
5. add any extra berries or fruit, as you wish. if you do this, then refrigerate for a couple of hours so the fruit gets soft. (sort of like making a tea sangria.)

Mixed Berry Iced Tea (Non-Caffeinated

6. Garnish as you wish. I used clementines and mint. which also taste great in the drink.

1. Pingo Apparel

I love this site because it has so many unique styles to choose from.  Also, the choices of organic and free trade brands are amazing! Back when Baby D had eczema, we would only dress him in organic clothing and/or wash his clothes with fragrance-free gentle detergent. There aren’t many reasonably priced dresses in the organic free trade sector, but this site fits the bill. The same price as something you’d buy in the baby section at Zara but the bonus factor is that it’s made with organic materials and free trade. So impressed with the soft movement of these fabrics and how comfortable it is for the kids.

2.  The little red hat

I am so obsessed with these cute hats. Especially for those babies born with little to no hair. Also, if you’re in Toronto or the GTA, she is local and you’ll get your product super fast and with the best service.

3. Blooms and crowns co

Another amazing local brand makes the best quality floral headbands I’ve seen. There is so much attention to detail that the flowers look real! Perfect touch for photo shoots and to dress up any outfit. The bands are also made to be comfortable for your little one’s head. Not super tight like the commercial ones.

4. HuxBaby

” Huxbaby is about minimalist fashions for kids with an adult level of style. Our designs blend super soft organic cotton with a clean aesthetic – clothes that allow kids to be kids without sacrificing style. “

Some of my favourite items:

Do you remember your favourite toy as a baby? Maybe you do by looking at baby pictures or your mom/dad must’ve told you a story that went something like this ..”you wouldn’t put it down and it went everywhere with you:..or…”we had to sneak it out of your hands to wash it”.. or simply.. “it was your favourite”. When I think of Fisher Price I remember my favourite telephone toy:

fisher price telephone

Fisher Price has created some pretty awesome toys since this telephone one and I think I’m having more fun playing with baby D’s toys than he is.😆 Five of these toys are part of their new Smart Stages™ line of toys. This Smart Stages™ technology allows you to change between 3 different playing levels. You change levels according to your little ones age. Or if your LO (little one) is like baby D and loves to explore and play with different things everyday then switching between the levels is a great idea. I’m a true believer that every child learns differently and there’s no one way. By switching between levels you can determine which level your LO enjoys the most.

fisher price toys

The Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Puppy ($29.94)

This cuddly puppy goes with baby D where ever he goes! He loves songs and interactive toys, so the level that plays the most songs is his favourite. When he was just over a year old he learnt how to shuffle through the songs by pressing the correct paw. Incredible! Now Baby Z has the same one but the girl version.

The Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Scooter ($39.99)

His first wheels! I remember the very first time we put him on this scooter he was under a year and his legs didn’t even touch the ground. That didn’t stop him from smiling and squealing when we pressed a few buttons on it for music and sounds. He grew up with this scooter beautifully. He learned very quickly that in order to stay on he had to hold the handlebars and once he turned over a year he was getting pushed and pulled on this scooter. His grandfather used his cane to pull him on the scooter and then his grandmother tied a stretchy fabric band on it to be pulled. Soon his legs were able to touch the ground and he started moving around. Absolutely loved going for the ride and as the scooter moves around it plays different sounds of vrooming, music and more!

Beat Bo ($49.99)

I remember the first time I saw this little robot I was so impressed with the lighting and the way it dances! This robot jukebox plays music and engages with babies and toddlers to dance along. Baby D and Z have loved this toy for years! My personal favourite feature is the record option. You record something and it plays it back in music form.

SMART STAGES TABLET ($19.99)

I love how this was Baby D’s first tablet! It lights up and twinkles to different sounds and music. It also has different stages so it grows with your child. They can learn the alphabets, animals and the letter it starts with and the sounds that go with the letters.

TEACHING TOTE ($20.00)

Baby D didn’t play with this as much as his other toys but Baby Z loves it! She loves pushing the tote flap back and putting random items she finds inside it! I also love that this tote bag comes with over 50 songs, words and phrases.

LAUGH AND LEARN PUPPY TRUCK ($8.00 ON SALE)

This satisfied Baby D’s obsession with trucks and construction. Comes with a puppy driver, truck bed moves up and down and 5+ sing-along songs, tunes & phrases.

Do you have any favourite Fisher Price toys?

Butter Baker

Have you heard? The Canadian company, Butter Baker just opened in Toronto. They have an amazing selection of sweet and savory pastries. Croissants, brioche, and danishes. They make their baked goods by using classic French confectionary cookery techniques. Everything is made with local ingredients including fresh herbs and free-run eggs, which makes me so happy because that’s all we use at home. Free-run eggs are important to us in our household. I can actually taste the difference.

Butter Baker in Toronto

I had the pleasure of trying their baked goods. (See below for the review of my favourites)

Strawberry Matcha Danish

Croissant base, Uji matcha vanilla custard, house-made fresh strawberry jam and topped with freshly sliced strawberries. All-Butter Baker products are made with natural ingredients including free-run eggs, real flour and dairy without added artificial flavours or preservatives.  (Contains dairy, nuts, and gluten.)

THOUGHTS: Flaky, sweet and love the fresh fruit.

Pear Tart

This tart is made with a half of a caramelized pear, free-run egg, Madagascar vanilla pastry crème, apricot glaze and a flaky puff pastry.

THOUGHTS: I’m usually not a fan of fruit in baked goods but these are too good to pass. Beautiful presentation and the taste is so good!

These cakes are so good! The Strawberry and Lime cake were light and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Butter Baker is located in the heart of downtown Toronto, 120 Dundas Street West. Very close to the Eaton center.

tips nail bar

Finally, a nail bar that I love, close to home! Tips Nail Bar at Dundas and Dovercourt.  When I do get my nails done, I prefer intricate nail art and shellac. I haven’t done artificial nails in over a decade. As I got older it made less sense, especially because I use my hands a lot and artificial nails would get in the way of me doing just normal everyday tasks.

The first time I went to this salon I got shellac nails done with a dotted pattern. (Everyone commented on the pattern I chose, saying how much they loved it.) I got the pattern from their Instagram page, which is an awesome lookbook for designs if you don’t know what you want.

tips nail bar

My nail polish did not chip until the end of 3 weeks since I had them done! The interior of this salon is minimalistic. Very clean interior and they don’t only do nails.

The services at Tips Nail Bar are:

Manicures
Pedicures
Brow Services
Dermalogica Facials

Be sure to also check out their ‘Mani-Cam’. It’s a camera built inside the wall. You place your hand inside this box in the wall, that is lit like a diva ring light. You take the picture and email it to yourself. Super cool! I’m really excited to go back and know that I’ll be in the experts’ hands. My favourite nail experts at this location are, Melissa (whose done my nails many many times) and Ashley who is also very talented!
