The night is more than just a quiet time. It is more than a time to fall asleep and reboot your body for another day. Think about this for a second, the sun and the moon do a switch, and because of that switch is how a lot of scientists understand the body at night. They understand that the body is on a constant element of transition. When you’re resting, everything inside your body is working hard and at night our skin is working over time to reset. In this post I’ll do a quick explanation of what happens to your skin at night and how Estee Lauder’s new Advanced Night Repair product, Intense Reset Concentrate can help rescue and reset your skin while you catch some Zzz’s.

Did you know skin loses more moisture at night?

Estee Lauder

While you sleep your skins temperature goes up which causes moisture loss. Losing water from the skin during this nightly process is called epidermal water loss. It actually starts at the end of the day and through the entire night. Not only does you skins temperature go up, but it also becomes more acidic. These factors cause your skin to get drier in most cases. However, we all have different skin types and concerns so it’s not always the case. Just the most common.

What does your skin need?

The best ingredient for accelerating your skin’s repair functions is hyaluronic acid. This is one of my favourites! I’m going to nerd out by telling you, because I am notorious for not drinking enough water in the day my body is already trying to take water from the foods I eat and whatever I drink to hydrate my muscles etc. There’s normally not enough left for my skin. After I wash my face at night, I can feel the discomfort and tightness of dehydration. So, hyaluronic acid in my skincare is the rescue my skin needs.

NEW Advanced Night Repair – Intense
Reset Concentrate

Estee Lauder has come out with a breakthrough overnight treatment that has Chronolux ™ S.O.S. Technology that rescues and resets the look of your skin, fast! Your skin will be immersed with 24-hour moisture with 15x concentrated hyaluronic acid in a multi-molecular weight complex. Your skin will be soothed from any tightness and dehydrated feeling in just 1 hour and it restores a more poreless, refined texture to your skin. Basically, you’ll be glowing in the A.M!

I’ve been using the Advanced Night Repair serum for years and have been obsessed with the results. If you’ve been using it as well, then this concentrate treatment would go on after you apply the serum. It’s to give your skin that extra boost! Just like when you do any other skincare treatments outside of your skincare routines.

I also have to mention that I love that they have a disclaimer on their site that says it was tested on all ethnicities. This is very important as ethnicity can play a role in skin types and the way your skin will respond to certain products.

Now that you know what happens to your skin at night, what are you going to do to rescue it?

As some of you may know, I had the worst fear of getting facials. It was one of those out of sight, out of mind things.

“If I just don’t go for a facial, then I’ll be just fine.”

Not true.

I grew up with really bad acne skin. The type when you just touch a spot and a pimple pops up in place. I had it up until my early 20’s. After a lot of trial and error, it got a lot better and in order to maintain that balance in my skin I decided to not do anything excessive. But just last year I started to do more research on different kinds of facials and how they benefit the skin. Going for that regular detox is important for your skin to breathe.

Alumier

Just a couple of months ago, I completed my facial journey with the professionals at Alumier MD and I have to say it has been a very interesting one. I’ve seen a huge difference in my skin and my make-up routine has changed as well because of it. I find myself using less foundation and concealer and more accentuating products like blush, lipstick, mascara and eyeliner. It’s amazing how treating the base of your skin can change your routine altogether!

AlumierMD

A quick tip, September to the end of May is when the UVB is not as strong, and it’s a better time to go for an AlumierMD Glow peel. During the summer it’s recommended to do other facials unless you can sit out of the sun after your peel for 3-6 weeks.

I did the AlumierMD Glow peel and noticed right away, less pigmentation, smoother and glowing skin! Every person is different and your journey won’t be exactly as mine. You may even see better results! Just keep in mind we all have different skin concerns, how much it can handle and its sensitivity. Your skin will get tested and there’s a consultation prior to doing any facial. Even during the facial process, they will ask you how you’re feeling and if you’re comfortable with it.

Here are some footage from before I started the journey, between and after.

Left: My first time going for an AlumierMD Glow Peel. You can tell where I have pigmentation. Forehead, sides of my face and near my smile lines. There’s also some pimple scarring visible and shadows around my lips.

It is completely normal to see some peeling. That is your dead skin shedding and making room for new skin.

Right: I remember not drinking enough water that week and my skin was taking a toll with dehydration. Your skin becomes more sensitive, hence the slight redness. (It was a great reminder to drink more water.)

Laura Mercier
Price: $34.00 CAD Colour: Optimist

I’ve been using Laura Mercier products for as long as I can remember. The first product being their radiance primer (still one of my top faves). Currently, I’ve been using some newer items by Laura Mercier that I just had to share with you on the blog! To the right, I’m wearing the Laura Mercier velour extreme matte lipstick in “optimist”. This lip colour is usually what I go for on a daily basis and to now have it in a longer-lasting and matte look, makes it perfect for Fall.

You may have noticed in my Instagram stories when I tried it on, I didn’t use a lip liner with it. What I love about a smaller stick lipstick is that you have more control in the lining and filling your lips with the one product.

$37.00 CAD – Silky Creme Lipstick with high-impact colour

So you’re not into mattes. Then you’ll love these Creme lipsticks that are so soft that it feels like it’s a lip treatment vs lipstick. These lipsticks are actually infused with Mediterranean sea algae extract!

Mauve Merveilleux – Available at Nordstrom, Sephora, Saks and thebay.com

These Rouge Essentiel Silky Creme Lipsticks lasts up to six hours without bleeding, feathering, drying, fading or settling into lines.

LAURA MERCIER
Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Poolside – $35.00 CAD

This stick eye shadow offers a 12 hour wear with its creamy formula! What I love about creamy formulas is you have enough time to do minor changes before it all completely dries. You can blend it out or build on the colour for more intensity.

So the Raptors lost tonights game. Don’t worry, have hope! Take it from a Leafs fan. Beleafing since 1993. It’s imperative that I mention Game 6 at the beginning of this blog post. It was an epic game and I’m not even a die-hard Raptors fan! If you’re a sports fan of any Toronto sport. Be it the Raptors, the Leafs, Blue Jays etc and you’re looking for a great place in Toronto where you can watch a game and have good food. I recommend heading over to Hunters Landing inside the Cityplace area. Right across from the Canoe park, steps away from Toronto attractions like the CN Tower, Rogers Center and a nice walk to Jurassic Park.

Calamari ans Nachos (choose from veggie, chicken or beef)

There are some close by parking options and did I already say that the food is great? Okay, so let’s get right into it. Between my girlfriends and I (@frequentflyerfoodie and @sweetshardxo ), for appetizers, we had: Calamari and Nachos. Our mains were: the Lobster Fettuccine, Tuna Poke Bowl and a Maple Chicken with vegetables.

We sat indoors, but check out the awesome patio seating as well!

If you’re still looking for a spot to watch the finals, make sure you check out Hunters Landing. It’s a prime location, food is good and the place is live during games and especially in the evenings!

I love that regardless of how busy it gets at Hunters Landing, there’s always someone ready to help you. Our orders came out exactly at the time they had said it would. It couldn’t get more perfect than that!

lobster main dish at Hunters Landing in Butter sauce

The butter sauce this Lobster fettuccine was swimming in, was so delicious! Lots of mushrooms and leek were additions to this finger-licking main. The only thing I’d do next time I get this, I wouldn’t be shy about the amount of pepper I’d want on top of this masterpiece.

The Tuna Poke Bowl made with super fresh ingredients and the tuna was so good!
Maple Cider Half Chicken with vegetables

Dinner isn’t dinner without dessert. We tried this chocolate goodness. I can’t remember what it was called, but what I will not forget, how perfect it was!

Quo Face Brush – $14.00

I’ve said this before in my previous posts, the limited-edition make-up brushes with Quo are my favourite! They’re unique packaging and the hairs on the brushes are superb. I’ve never had a limited edition brush I didn’t like. The wide handle fits your fingertips perfectly and I love the wide brush at the top for contouring or applying bronzer.

Quo Transforming Lip Kit – $16.00

The stain in the lip duo set has amazing staying power. I swatched it on my wrist and when I went to remove it, I had to use a cleanser. So awesome for long parties where you’ll be eating and drinking. Staying power is necessary. The sheer iridescent lip gloss, pairs perfectly with the stain. Gives your lip a nice highlight!

Quo Glow Beauty Oil – $18.00

quo shoppers drug mart beauty oil

This lightweight oil works alone, under foundation or even use it as a natural highlight in focused areas. Tip: Add a drop into your foundation for a more uniform natural glow. I love that it’s lightweight, perfect for the summer when you don’t want to feel like you’re wearing a lot of make-up.

Pick this collection up before it’s all gone! The limited edition can only be found at Shoppers Drug Mart.

The mascara’s I lean towards are the ones that look as if I’m wearing false lashes. Here are my top 4 mascaras that I’ve been rotating lately. Different price ranges to fit whatever your budget is. Enjoy!

1.Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Primer and Velvet Noir Mascara:

What I love about this primer and mascara duo is that you get the ultimate false lashes look! The packaging is minimalist and this bold look does not flake throughout the day. Primer $33 and Noir $33 CAD. Found at Sephora.

2. Bad Gal Bang! Benefit Cosmetics:

$33.00 CAD

The brush isn’t traditionally what I go for but I love that the tip is skinnier. Great for building volume without clumping on those hard to reach lashes. You can find this at Shoppers Drug Mart.

TOP 4 Mascaras For Full Volume

3. NARS Explicit:

Obsessed with the thick brush and this buildable formula that won’t clump or smudge. The black mascara is one of the darkest black mascaras I’ve tried. You can find this at Sephora.

4. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara:

When I’m looking for a mascara on a budget that will give me solid volume, I am always drawn to this drug store mascara. It’s inexpensive and often on sale. Only think I don’t like is the fall out I get by the end of the day. Found at Shoppers Drug Mart.

$9.99 CAD

My current make-up routine has been Laura Mercier obsessed! I’ve been using so many of her products in my daily routine and one of them being the Colour Infusion Blush. I love the range of colours to choose from and they all look so good on my skin tone.

The Colour Infusion Blushes come in two finishes. Shimmer and matte. I’ve always been a matte blush wearer but recently tried the shimmer in this line and loved it! Most shimmer blushes I came across have too much shimmer and start to look like a colourful highlighter of some sort. No Bueno.

You can find this blush at Sephora for $38.00 CAD. The blush is buildable without looking cake-y and has 10 hours of wear. I love how natural the finish is no matter how much you build on.
TIP: Build on this blush to get the intensity you’re looking for.

These blushes are infused with micro-fine powders and look natural on all skin tones. You can actually tone down the vivid colours with some Laura Mercier Translucent powder to get the softest tone. Because it’s a buildable blush you’re able to do this vs other vivid blush colour brands.

Laura Mercier Colour Infusion Blush is Buildable

My favourite colours that I’ve been using regularly are Grapefruit, Rose, Kir Royale and Chai. I love that the colour stays true on either liquid foundation or bare skin. Some brands I’ve used in the past change depending on what the surface is like.

Chai is the most perfect colour for everyday office/work make-up look. I wear Kir Royale in the evenings and Grapefruit is so playful! See below images from Instagram where I wore some of these colours.

Of the many hot topics in Online Marketing, Hafsa from @happilyhafsa and myself discussed ‘Building Your Brand and Influencer Marketing’ on Instagram Live. I’ve been following Hafsa on Instagram for a while now and watching her grow her community (notice how I didn’t say followers) has been exciting to watch. She is a motivational Muslim mom who helps moms feel happy and has created an outstanding business by doing that.

Influencer marketing will continue to grow and where we are now is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much room for it to evolve into the digital age of authentic advertising. Those who will stay on top are definitely those who create REAL content and content that has VALUE. Word of mouth has always come on top before any other marketing. Building that trust with your community, your audience is what makes you an awesome influencer. Keep in mind the emphasis on being authentic. It’s the best feeling ever when I get messages from people telling me they tried what I recommended and they love it. As a viewer/follower, engage and learn. Ask questions. A great influencer/blogger/content creator will try their best to respond to you. Whether it’s a reply in DM, a story or a full on blog post.

HumJK

In case you missed our Instagram live, here’s what we talked about. Not including the side conversations that were extremely entertaining.
You snooze, you lose. 😉

Tell me about Happily Hafsa?

Hafsa first started with the mindful glutton. She was sharing recipes, specifically instant pot and talked about her weight loss journey. At the same time when she started talking about mom life and body positivity, her audience resonated with that content a lot more. In Feb 2017 Hafsa and her husband who is a consultant; worked on new branding and HappilyHafsa was born.

She is very clear about what her brand represents. Helping moms, be happy. Hafsa also does blog coaching and makes sure that she coaches those who fit into her niche of happiness.

Video, IGTV and Experiential Marketing is going to be huge for 2019.

HumJK

Let’s talk about a time you discussed a topic and the positive impact it had on someone?

Hafsa did an Instagram Live where she discussed her trip to Toronto after 6 months and she got hammered with comments about her weight gain. It was a challenging experience, and she was told by her husband “no one can make you feel bad about yourself unless you let them”. Months later a viewer contacted Hafsa and told her how that live made a positive impact on her life. This live got 1800+ views and helped so many with being body positive.

Celebrate yourself, regardless of how you look.

HappilyHafsa

For those who are trying to build a brand, what is something they can start doing to determine what their personal brand is?

Your brand needs to be an experience. That includes your brand values, your voice, colours and images. Be clear on what that is and your experience will become consistent and will resonate with your audience.

If you’re struggling with building a presence, get on Instagram stories. Hafsa’s first story she recorded 30 times before she felt comfortable with it.

Things change and the more you practice, the better you’ll get.

HappilyHafsa

Hafsa suggests if you’re not comfortable showing your face then show what you see. Or share your experience, like if you’re walking in the mall. Also, if they turn out to be amazing then add them to your highlights. 4

A community is the foundation to building a brand and being an influencer. What do you recommend people do to create a community?

Hafsa did a research project on Instagram stories. She asked her viewers why they like the bloggers they follow. 70% of the words that were used, pointed to REAL. They love people who express the reality of life.
Be real, be yourself and be authentic. People relate to people who are showing the reality of life. Be true to your values.

You don’t have to have everyone like you.

You just need the right people to like you.

HappilyHafsa

For brands who sell products, show behind the scenes. Allow your customers to see how your product came about. Even as an influencer, there’s a huge opportunity on Instagram stories to show the other side of your life outside of your curated content.

When you’re trying to grow and find your niche, focus on your audience vs. your competitors. Focusing on your ideal audience is very important. Do research on hashtags that your audience is using and engage with those people.

Don’t focus on the numbers, your community is what matters.

HumJK

Your community could be like minded individuals who are under the same category as you are. Having a good balance of following those who are in your community, who inspire you and then those who fall under your own personal or brand interests is very important in building your community. Hafsa mentions to have a balance so that you’re not being influenced by your competition to create the same content that they’re creating.

You’re never too big to connect with your audience.

HappilyHafsa

I had so much fun doing this Instagram Live with Hafsa, and I’m positive I didn’t cover everything we talked about. Stay tuned on Instagram for my next IG live and make sure to follow @happilyhafsa.

nat geo kids weird but true

For as long as I can remember I’ve loved watching National Geographic on TV and reading their magazines. When I hadn’t learned to read yet, I’d look at all the pictures and examine them to see what I could understand from the images alone. Fast forward to having two children, D is almost 4 and Baby Z, 2. They’re both obsessed with animals and love these books!

This truly works in my favour in so many ways. I myself love animals and enjoy learning new things and when I read a book or put on National Geographic shows, they’re both intrigued! Whether while reading books or through an episode, I highly recommend engaging with your children on what they’re looking at. I love to ask Daniyal questions about what we’re watching or reading. Before reading I’ll ask him, “what animal is this?”, or “tell me something about this animal”.90% of the time he knows and tells me, the other times he’ll try to guess. I give him clues of where the animal lives, what it eats or perhaps a species category. Anything to start a conversation about it. This is a great way to encourage curiosity.

I don’t get the same reaction from my children when reading books with illustrations, compared to real life fascinating images of animals and facts. He enjoys reading these Weird But True! books because of the fascinating images that bring the facts to life. The Weird But True! facts started showing up in National Geographic Kids magazines in 2004, and it’s been their most popular feature to date. It was actually an idea from a former magazine editor’s 60-year-old mom! We love that there’s a mix of all sorts of facts in these books. And more than a third are about animals.

The National Geographic Kids Weird But True! books can be found here: natgeokids.com/wbtbooks. This series has lots of videos as well. My kids love watching videos about animals and learning new things about them. I Save these YouTube videos into an album or playlist:

• Weirdest, Bestest, Truest playlist: bit.ly/2pKcbVa
• Everything Weird But True! playlist: bit.ly/2E7XJAf

When I started reading some of the facts out loud I even surprised myself! Like, I didn’t know rats can laugh?! And now I want to know what that sounds like. Or do I?

These books generally retail for $7.99 in the US and $10.99 in Canada. A portion of all book purchases help support National Geographic Kids magazine. ENTER TO WIN:

iRobot Braava Jet Review

It’s been over a month since I started using the iRobot Braava Jet 240. Before getting the Braava Jet, let me give you an idea of how hard it was to keep up with clean floors. Fridays and weekends, for those who work full-time, is a downtime, right? Not for me. Fridays are my end of the week deep clean days. During the week, between working and then working on content creation, I have very little time to bring out the mop and even sometimes the broom for a full house clean.

Having two toddlers means there’s a mess pretty much ALL the time. Most of the time because they only eat in one area of the house, the mess is confined to that area. Which makes it a lot easier to clean up. But on many occasions, the crumbs and drink spills travel to other rooms.

iRobot Braava JetThe kids are asleep and I finally have time to myself. I’ve put together a plate of brie and crackers and I’m typing away while Bob is cleaning the floors. At 2:30 am. Bob, is our iRobot Braava Jet.

Funny story, when I first put Bob down to clean the kitchen. I didn’t introduce or even open it up in front of anyone. My curious toddler, Daniyal saw the iRobot first.

“what’s that Mama?”

“It’s a Robot. It cleans floors.”

“What’s his name?”

“You can give him a name, sweetheart.”

“Okay, it’s Bob. Hi, Bob!”

Busy Mom Hacks: iRobot Braava Jet Review

One of the many direct messages I got after posting Instagram stories of the iRobot Braava Jet, cleaning; was, “do your kids try grabbing it?” and another popular question, “does it actually work?”

[Tweet “The @irobot Braava Jet can actually remember obstacles and slows down around them. Even fits under our cabinets and couch! #momhacks”]

I don’t know exactly why they don’t bother Bob too much. But I think it’s somewhere in between not knowing what that robot could do and the fact that they named it Bob – it’s gained some respect already in their eyes. Daniyal always says how hard it works. Especially when Bob is working on those hard stains, it does this little vibration micro wiggle. Not very noticeable unless you really listen for it or look for it. No, they don’t grab it. Zoeya has put her foot on it, to test to see if it can carry her weight and give her a ride. (I’m guessing.) But after I’ve told her no, she gets it.

Does the iRobot Braava Jet work?

Yes, it does! What I love about it the most is the size. At first, I thought, is it too small? Will it take too long to do bigger rooms? It is not too small. It is actually the perfect size and was designed to get into hard to reach areas and if it’s working during the day and you have people over, it can even manoeuvre around objects fluidly. One of the many smart features on the iRobot is that it has a seamless navigation calculator. This feature is called the iAdapt 2.0 Navigation that allows the robot to map and track where it has been to clean floors up to 200 ft in damp/dry mode and 150 ft in wet mode. It also cleans the floor in a systematic pattern, ensuring it covers the entire area.

SMART TECH

It’s so awesome that it can actually remember obstacles and slows down around them. Even fits under our cabinets and couch. All those hard to reach areas that I normally would have to get on my knees to scrub or move furniture to get too. There were times when I moved things around and the iRobot bumped into it, but even when it bumps into anything it’s gentle. It will avoid stairs and doesn’t ride up onto rugs.

irobot review

SIMPLE TO USE

You select the pad you want to use. There are 3 types:

Wet Mopping – The iRobot will pass these areas 3x to clean dirt and stains.
They all work great on hardwood, tile or stone.
Damp Sweeping– It will pass these areas 2x to clean dirt and stains.
Dry Sweeping – It will pass 1x to pick up hair, dust and dirt.

You also never have to touch the dirty pads when you’re done. There’s an eject button you use near the water reservoir. Hover over a garbage pin, click the button and the pad falls off. So easy. To put a new one on, you just slide it into place. Speaking of the water reservoir, I noticed that I don’t have to fill it very often. Maybe after 2-3 uses, but it will differ depending on where you are using the iRobot and what pads you’re using. To add water, just open the tap to slow running water and tilt the iRobot so the water flows down to the water reservoir easily.

Water goes in here.

braava jet mom hack
Eject Braava Jet pads from here, right into the garbage bin.

The precision jet spray and vibrating cleaning head help loosen up the dirt and stains, while the Braava Jet pads break up and lock away the dirt. If you haven’t guessed already, (many people asked me this question as well) the cleaning solution is worked into the pad itself. So you don’t need to add anything to the floors or put inside the iRobot. Use your judgement, if your floors are really dirty then do clean up over the top so it’s easier for the iRobot. Because I use it every other day so the floors are always clean, I rarely have to do that. There’s also a nifty app you can download that allows you to start the iRobot from another room in your home. It uses Bluetooth to communicate to the iRobot.

I’m already thinking about what a great gift this will make for our loved ones! It retails at $279 CAD. Which if you ask me, it’s a great investment! It’s also the perfect mom hack for keeping your home spotless while you tend to other things on your never-ending list of to do’s.
